Understanding the SHRM-CP Exam Structure

The SHRM-CP has two question types: knowledge items (straightforward HR knowledge) and situational judgment items (SJIs), which present workplace scenarios where you choose the best HR response. SJIs are the harder and more important type — they're what separates SHRM from simpler knowledge-based certifications.

  • When multiple answers seem right, choose the one that's most proactive and business-aligned
  • SHRM's Competency Model drives the behavioral questions — study it deeply

The Three Content Domains

SHRM-CP covers: People (talent acquisition, L&D, total rewards), Organization (structure, workforce management, technology), and Workplace (employee relations, compliance, diversity, global). L&D is explicitly part of the People domain — if you're an L&D professional, this is your strongest area.

12-Week Study Plan

  • Weeks 1–4: Work through SHRM Learning System or an accredited prep provider
  • Weeks 5–8: Focus on weak domains; study SHRM's BoCK (Body of Competency and Knowledge) PDF
  • Weeks 9–10: Practice exams — SHRM's official tests are expensive; Mometrix and other providers offer alternatives
  • Weeks 11–12: Timed mock exams; review every wrong answer with explanation
